Scope & Content Planning for the project was begun in 1979 after the gates of
the Tellico Dam were closed. The project was a cooperative
effort between the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and the
Tennessee Valley Authority to commemorate the Cherokee
presence in the tittle Tennessee Valley, an area of Cherokee
cultural and political development during the eighteenth
century.

The Museum which focuses on the life and times of Sequoyah,
the only non-literate person in history to singlehandedly
devise a writing system, opened in June of 1986.
